Curation Facility

The Center for Archaeological Studies earned certification as a Curatorial Facility from the Texas Historical Commission in 2009. The THC Curatorial Facility Certification Program standards and criteria were used to design our curatorial facility and lab. Our facility provides over 3,000 square feet of fully climate controlled storage for collections with preventive and routine maintenance performed by the university.

Climate is controlled by a new zoned HVAC system that regulates temperature and relative humidity as well as filters air pollutants and particulates as described by the THC CRCP standards.

Access to the lab and curation facility is restricted and secured with an alarm system.

Additionally, we have a separate restricted area within our curation facility for housing material with special security, environmental or cultural concerns.

CAS currently houses collections from sites on the Texas State University campus and from CAS projects in and around Hays County. Additionally, CAS serves as a repository for non-CAS collections, including state associated Held-in-Trust collections as well as federal collections requiring a repository that meets the standards set forth in title 36, chapter I, part 79 of the Code of Federal Regulations (36CFR79).
